Zeta regains hurricane status overnight, heads toward Louisiana

4 a.m. update

Zeta restrengthened to a hurricane overnight and is expected to move into Louisiana later Wednesday with winds around 90 mph.

11 p.m. update

Zeta remained a tropical storm as of 11 p.m. Tuesday but is expected to hit hurricane status again overnight.

The storm will make landfall Wednesday mid- to late-afternoon. It has sustained winds of 70 mph.

6 p.m. update

Zeta remained a tropical storm Tuesday evening, but the storm is expected to regain hurricane strength, chief meteorologist Tom Terry said.

The storm will like reach hurricane status again overnight, he said.

Terry said Zeta is forecast to make landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday.

The storm is about 450 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River and is expected to bring hurricane conditions and storm surge to coastal communities throughout the day Wednesday.

3:40 p.m. update

Zeta is expected to regain hurricane status Tuesday evening after weakening over northern Yucatan.

Cooler waters and some shear should keep the system from becoming a major hurricane as it makes landfall late Wednesday afternoon in southeast Louisiana.

This marks the seventh tropical system to impact the northern Gulf this year, and the eleventh to make a U.S. landfall, which is a record.

Tropical Storm Zeta is expected to restrengthen into a hurricane as it nears Louisiana on Wednesday.

As of the 11 a.m. update on Tuesday, Channel 9 meteorologist Rusty McCranie said the storm has winds up to 65 mph and is emerging from the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

McCranie said the storm is forecast to gain strength and speed as it tracks toward Louisiana. Landfall is expected there late Wednesday.
