Dump truck fire could delay Volusia County I-4 project already months behind schedule

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Already three months behind schedule, a $134 million Interstate 4 expansion project in Volusia County was set back even further when a dump truck caught fire and damaged the roadway Wednesday.

The project was scheduled for completion in February and work has already gone on nearly three extra months.

Wednesday morning’s wreck and ensuing fire snarled traffic in the area for hours and caused damage to recently-laid concrete that workers will now have to repair before the project can finish.

The cost of the extra work and when it would take place had not been determined.

The Florida Department of Transportation has not decided if it will fine the company contracted to complete the 13 miles of I-4 expansion for the delay in completion.

Weather delays and safety concerns are part of the reason the project’s completion date was moved back seven months, FDOT said.

It was not clear if repairs from Wednesday’s wreck will push the date back even further.
