ORLANDO, Fla. — A car that moments earlier had fled a traffic stop by police crashed into a telephone pole in Orlando early Tuesday morning, killing both the driver and passenger, according to police.

Orlando police said an officer tried to pull the car over on eastbound State Road 408 near Orange Blossom Trail around 2:30 a.m. When the car refused to pull over, officers said they terminated the traffic stop.

Police said the car then exited the highway onto OBT and crashed into a telephone pole at a high rate of speed on Carter Street, killing 26-year-olds Santana Sutton, Jr. and Daniel Golshannejad.

The impact of the crash sent the stick that props up the car's hood half a block down the street.

The crash also knocked out power to the surrounding neighborhood. According to the Orlando Utility Commission, at 5:30 a.m. 179 customers were without power due to the crash. By 10:30 a.m., the power was restored.

Police did not say why they wanted to stop the car in the first place. Police said the car had bullet holes that were covered in duct tape.

The car that crashed has a similar description to vehicle seen in video of a deadly shooting in downtown Orlando in January outside Club Lit, but investigators would not say if the cases were connected.
