Home runs power Florida State past Southern Miss, 7-2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Steven Wells Jr. and Jackson Lueck hit home runs as top-seeded Florida State advanced to the Tallahassee Regional championship with a 7-2 win over No. 2 Southern Miss on Saturday.


   The Seminoles (39-20) will face the Southern Miss-South Alabama winner on Sunday night.

   Florida State took a 3-2 lead in the second on Wells' three-run homer to left off Cord Cockrell (7-2). In the sixth, Lueck had a two-run shot to left-center to extend the lead to 7-2.

   After the Golden Eagles (41-19) scored twice in the first, FSU starter Tyler Holton settled down. The freshman left-hander (3-3) went 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Jim Voyles went 3 1/3 innings for his second save.

   John Sansone added three hits and Matt Henderson had two RBIs for the Seminoles. Hunter Slater had two hits and an RBI for the Golden Eagles.
