WHEELING, W.V. — C.J. Severyn opened up the scoring in the first period and G Maxime Clermont put together a 33 save performance as the Solar Bears collected a 3-1 victory over the Wheeling Nailers at the WesBanco Arena on Saturday night.
Severyn put the Solar Bears on the board late in the first. A Nailers clearing attempt was intercepted by D Connor Goggin in the left circle, and he slid a backhand pass into the high slot for Severyn who fired a wrist shot into the top right corner at 18:49. The Solar Bears took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
After a scoreless second period, Wheeling tied the contest 1:58 into the third. F Christian Minella tapped a puck out of the left corner and found F Sahir Gill on the doorstep. Gill forced the puck over the line to lock the score at 1-1. F Tyler Murovich answered back for the Solar Bears when he picked off a pass on the left wing, charged to the front of the net, and slipped the puck under the pads of G Kieran Millan to restore the Solar Bears lead at 9:17. The Nailers made a late push, but with the goaltender pulled D Cody Wild fed a puck through the neutral zone and F Zach Harrison deposited the shot into the empty net to give the Solar Bears a 3-1 win. G Maxime Clermont earned first star honors in the game, stopping 12 of 13 shots in the third and 33 of 34 overall to earn the win for Orlando.
