TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State could face sanctions from a federal investigation into how it handles sexual assault reports following last year's rape accusations against Heisman-trophy winner Jameis Winston.

The woman who accused the quarterback filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights. It decided the university should be investigated for possible Title IX violations over the way it responds to sexual violence complaints.

In December, state prosecutors announced that Winston would not be charged.

Worst-case scenario for Florida State would be the suspension of federal assistance funds.

A spokesman for the Department of Education says the civil rights office has not done that or needed any other procedures to force compliance in the last 10 years. An agreement is typically reached with the university.
