LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) —
Kayla Thigpen had 20 points to lead Palm Beach Lakes to a 58-40 win Saturday against Wekiva in the Florida Class 7A girls basketball championship game.
Palm Beach Lakes (28-2) trailed 16-13 with 5:25 remaining in the second period before going on a 10-0 run to take a 23-16 lead that it would not relinquish.
The Mustangs (26-6) trailed 28-22 at halftime and could never get any closer than six points in the second half as Palm Beach Lakes' defense limited them to just 4-of-15 shooting from the floor.
The Rams led 40-29 after three periods and eventually pushed the lead to 21 points in the fourth period after baskets by Thigpen and Jasmyne Martin.
Wekiva defeated Palm Beach Lakes last year in the 7A semifinals.
Martin finished with 14 points while Jacqueline Johnson had six points, 15 rebounds and five blocks for Palm Beach Lakes.
Ciara Cumbie led Wekiva with 12 points and four rebounds while Kyla Allison had 10 points and seven rebounds.
