Evans Comes Up Short In 7A Finals

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Kahul Thomas had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Pompano Beach Blanche Ely to a 58-50 victory over Orlando Evans in the boys Class 7A state basketball championship game Saturday.

Blanche Ely (27-1) took a 29-21 lead into halftime and extended it to as many as 18 after a 3-pointer from Lance Tejada with 3:21 remaining in the third quarter.

Evans (20-8), however, fought back and went on a 12-2 run to start the fourth period that pulled the Trojans within five with 2:51 left in regulation. But Thomas and Tejada hit crucial free throws down the stretch that put the game out of the reach.

C.J. Williamson led Evans with 14 points and seven rebounds, but the sophomore guard also committed 11 turnovers. Dallas Cameron finished with 14 points for Ely, which won its second straight 7A championship.
