ORLANDO, Fla. — The White House Coronavirus Task Force says Florida is experiencing a “resurgence” of new COVID-19 cases.
Its weekly report found many of those new cases are in Orange County.
Local Epidemiologist Alvina Chu disagrees with the White House’s assessment.
“To characterize it as a resurgence, is potentially premature,” Chu says.
On Friday, the Florida Department of Health reported 5,200 new cases. On Thursday, there were more than 6,200 new cases- the highest numbers since September 1.

Dr. Chu says the newest cases are mostly among people between the ages of 15 and 24.
The White House report says those people are largely asymptomatic and are now unknowingly beginning to spread the virus to more vulnerable individuals.
In the report, obtained by ABC News, the White House makes several recommendations to help Florida bring its cases down.

It wants Florida to immediately expand access to rapid antigen testing, and remind people to get a flu shot.
They also continue to urge people to wear masks and practice safe social distancing.
