MIAMI — A woman is facing charges in Florida after surveillance video showed her hitting a child with a belt in a south Florida school.
Kady Sewell is facing charges of child abuse, trespassing and educational interference, according to court records.
Surveillance video shared with WTVJ appears to show Sewell beating a child with a belt at the Bethel Seventh Day Adventist private school.
Zendre Pollard told WSVN that her son was the victim in the attack. Pollard told the station that her son had been bullied by Sewell’s son, and that the incident was prompted when her son “defended himself.”
“My son got bullied by the son, and now he got bullied by the mom as well,” Pollard said to WSVN.
Bethel Junior Academy released a statement saying, “We are aware of a physical altercation by a parent against a student not their own in the lunchroom… Our students are our highest priority, and we are shocked and saddened to learn of this unfortunate incident. … We do not condone inappropriate behavior in any form. We will continue to cooperate with authorities in their investigation and will pray for all involved,” WFOR reported.
An arrest report obtained by WTVJ says Sewell approached the child in the cafeteria, said to “Stop (expletive) hitting my children,” and then began hitting the 13-year-old with a belt.
“The mom comes in fussing and cussing at my child, and just beating him in his face! His head, his face, his arms,” Pollard said to WTVJ.
Pollard said watching the video filled her with anger.
“It was rage,” she told WFOR. “It was rage, it was rage. Hard to watch. He has seizures as well and she’s just hitting him in the face.”
The child had a welt on his lip and redness on his arm, police told WTVJ.
