IMMOKALEE, Fla. — Streets in a southwest Florida town are being overrun by stray dogs, an animal rescue nonprofit said. The organization is asking residents to spay, neuter and vaccinate their pets.

Immokalee, a small town located northwest of Naples, is being subjected to overpopulation by dogs wandering loose through the city, WZVN reported. Some of the dogs roam the streets and are in danger from oncoming vehicles, while others raise their litters in empty fields in Collier County.

“Some end up hit by cars. Some end up with worms, some end up sick, or they end up pregnant and having more puppies,” Kristen Karnes told the television station.

SNIP volunteers are hoping to get the canine population under control by opening a second clinic in Immokalee, WZVN reported.

Officials at the nonprofit said they believe the population also can be curbed with an Immokalee-based officer to increase enforcement, WBBH reported.
