The Florida Highway Patrol is trying to find out why a man reportedly drove through a perimeter fence at the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, crashing into the airport.
The crash happened around 2:50 a.m. Thursday, WFTS reported.
Police said Juan Monsivis was driving his pickup truck recklessly on a nearby interstate, and they had tried to catch up to it, but lost sight of the vehicle, according to WFTS.
The driver then drove through a fence, drove on the airport’s perimeter road, crossing an air carrier ramp, then right through a cinder block wall, finally coming to a stop at a rental car company counter, the Bradenton Herald reported.
The incident was caught on camera.
The crash also destroyed a baggage claim belt. Luckily because of the time, there were no passengers in the area, the Bradenton Herald reported.
Damage estimates are between $250,000 and $1 million, the Herald reported.
Monsivis was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries and is in a medically induced coma.
Police said they are not sure if he had a medical emergency before the crash, or if it was something else.
They did rule out terrorism, the Herald reported.
