RIVERVIEW, Fla. — Body camera video from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office shows the moments a deputy opened fire on a man in his Florida home, killing him.
The deputy had been dispatched to the home of 88-year-old Ronald Ehrich, a former police officer, for a welfare check, WTSP reported. A neighbor called police because she saw the home’s garage door open and hadn’t seen Ehrich.
The body camera video shows the deputy announcing herself multiple times in the home, calling for Ehrich and checking rooms. She eventually found him on the second floor.

According to police, “The deputy retreated down the hall and into a guest bedroom as Ehrich cornered her. After stating she was with the Sheriff’s Office and making several commands to drop the gun, in fear of her life, the deputy fired her HCSO issued firearm.”
Ehrich was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The sheriff said Ehrich lived alone, and had no criminal history, but did not know whether he had any mental health issues, The Washington Post reported.
