The State College of Florida offers a variety of classes. A contractor for the Florida Department of Transportation might want to consider signing up for a spelling course.
Motorists driving on U.S. 41 near the Venice campus of the college may have done a double-take at a DOT’s informational green sign near the school, which read “State Collage of Florida,” the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported.

Wellington Moore sent a photo of the misspelled sign to the newspaper last week.
“This is unbelievable,” Moore wrote the Herald-Tribune. “The irony that an institution of higher learning has a sign like this is just hilarious to me.”
Brian Rick, a spokesperson for the Florida DOT, told the newspaper he cringed when he saw the photo of the sign. Rick said the sign was removed Monday.
“This sign is part of an ongoing sidewalk construction project on U.S. 41 from River Road to Woodmere Park Boulevard,” Rick wrote “The contractor is responsible to correct the misspelled sign.”
The contractor is Florida Safety Contractors Inc., the Herald-Tribune reported.
In addition to signs, the contractor is responsible for the construction of sidewalk and bus shelter pads, the installation of guardrail and lighting and drainage improvements, the newspaper reported.
The job is scheduled to be finished this summer.
