Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died last week of complications related to metastatic pancreatic cancer, will lie in repose this week at the nation’s highest court, officials announced Monday.
In a news release, officials said Ginsburg will lie in repose at the top of the front steps to the Supreme Court building on Wednesday and Thursday following a private ceremony for Ginsburg’s family, friends and members of the Supreme Court. The last justice to lie in repose at the Supreme Court was Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in 2016.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that Ginsburg will lie in state Friday in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statutory Hall.
“Justice Ginsburg embodied justice, brilliance and goodness, and her passing is an incalculable loss for our democracy and for all who sacrifice and strive to build a better future for our children," Pelosi said in a statement. "Every family in America benefited from her brilliant legacy and courage. Her opinions have unequivocally cemented the precedent that all men and women are created equal.”
Ginsburg will be buried next week in a private service at Arlington National Cemetery, according to Supreme Court officials.
Appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg served on the nation’s highest court for 27 years. She was the second woman appointed to the Supreme Court and championed progressive causes.
Ginsburg died Friday. She was 87.
