Recall alert: More products with Jif peanut butter recalled

Time to check the pantry again. The Jif peanut butter recall has expanded.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that several more companies were voluntarily pulling products that contain Jif peanut butter due to potential salmonella contamination. In addition, prepared items containing Jif peanut butter made at major grocery store chains nationwide are also part of the expanded recall. Cargill is also recalling selected snacks and candy made with Jif peanut butter.

The expanded recall includes Garden Cut Apple Wedges and Celery Bites with Peanut Butter, Mary’s Harvest Celery and Apple Peanut Butter Cups, Fresh Seasons Power Packs, Coblentz Chocolate Company products containing peanut butter and multiple brands of fruit snack trays and cups. On Friday, The J.M. Smucker Co. announced it was recalling select Jif Peanut Butter products to potential salmonella contamination. According to the FDA, 14 illnesses and 2 hospitalizations have been linked to Jif Peanut Butter products. The last reported illness was on May 1. No deaths have been attributed to the outbreak, according to the FDA.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The FDA urges consumers who have purchased these items to dispose of them or return the items to their local store for a full refund.
