Recall alert: Midwestern Pet Foods recalls dog, cat food amid salmonella risk

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Midwestern Pet Foods Inc. issued a voluntary recall for dozens of its pet food products Friday due to possible salmonella contamination.

The latest recall comes six months after the Evansville, Indiana-based company recalled certain bags of its Sportmix pet food that ultimately led to the deaths of 70 dogs and sickening of another 80 from aflatoxin poisoning.

The salmonella-related recall affects certain dog and cat food brands manufactured at the company’s Monmouth, Illinois, facility, according to a company announcement posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s website.

The affected brands were sold nationwide and include CanineX, Earthborn Holistic, Meridian, Pro Pac, Pro Pac Ultimates, Sportmix, Sportmix Wholesomes, Sportstrial, Unrefined and Venture.

As of Saturday, there were no reports of any illness related to the latest recall.

According to the company statement, routine sampling detected the potential for contamination, and all affected products have an “M” in the expiration date code, such as “EXP AUG/02/22/M1/L#.”

Per the recall, Midwestern Pet Foods urged retailers and distributors to pull recalled lots from their shelves and inventory and, when possible, contact customers who purchased affected items.

According to the company, salmonella in pets can cause lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and fever, as well as decreased appetite and abdominal pain.

Meanwhile, humans who handle contaminated products may also contract salmonella bacteria, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever, as well as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms in rare cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
