The Korean automaker said that owners of 2017-2019 Kia Sedona minivans, 2017-2019 Soul and Soul EV hatchbacks, and 2017-2018 Forte sedans and coupes will need to be repaired by a Kia dealer, according to Consumer Reports. The repairs will be done free of charge, the company said.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the airbag control unit cover on the recalled models “may contact a memory chip on the printed circuit board and damage the electrical circuit.”

That damage could result in airbags that will not deploy in a crash.

According to Consumer Reports, there have been no crashes or injuries related to the recall. However, there have been 13 customer complaints and 947 warranty claims, according to documentation Kia provided to the NHTSA.

Kia said the problem was first detected in South Korea in July 2021, Autoblog reported.

Owners will be notified by mail beginning March 21, according to The Associated Press.

Consumers with questions can contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542. Owners may also contact the NHTSA safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
