Nearly 2,000 cases of Diet Coke, Sprite and Fanta have been taken off shelves in three states due to “potential foreign material” in the cans, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The drinks were pulled from Florida, Alabama and Mississippi stores. The FDA has not identified what the material is inside the cans.
While the cans were pulled from shelves in November, the FDA is warning customers in affected states to check their homes and discard the products.
The recalled products were sold as 12-ounce aluminum cans packaged in a 12-pack fridge pack. A fridge pack is a skinny cardboard box with a cut-out to dispense the cans.
The affected cans best by, lot and UPC numbers are:
- Diet Coke cans that have a best-by date of 01/29/24 with lot No. JAN2924MBD3, and UPC 49000028911;
- Fanta’s cans that are best by 07/29/24 with lot No. JUL2924MBD3 and UPC 49000030730;
- Sprite cans that are best by 07/29/24 with lot No. JUL2924MBD3 and UPC 49000028928.
Coca-Cola Beverages Florida shared the following information about the recall:
"Coca-Cola Beverages Florida, LLC (Coke Florida) is the local Coca-Cola bottler with exclusive manufacturing, sales, and distribution rights in the majority of Florida. The area not served by Coke Florida is the part of Florida known as the “Panhandle.” The Panhandle area is exclusively operated by a different bottler, Coca-Cola UNITED. Coke Florida and Coca-Cola UNITED are both independent bottlers.
"Coca-Cola UNITED voluntarily recalled a limited quantity of Fanta Orange, Sprite, and Diet Coke in a total of 48 stores in the following Coca-Cola UNITED markets: Valparaiso, FL; Robertsdale and Mobile, AL; Gulfport and Ocean Springs, MS.
"The only Florida market involved was Valparaiso, FL. Coke Florida does not serve that market and did not manufacture or distribute any of the products addressed by the recall. Coca-Cola UNITED has confirmed no impacted product remains in the market, and all recall activities in affected markets are complete.
"Coca-Cola Beverages Florida is the local family-owned Coca-Cola bottler that operates the majority of the state of Florida, from Jacksonville to the Keys. The company has four manufacturing operations in Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, and Miami and proudly produces 119 million cases of products each year.
"The Coca-Cola system takes the safety of all products seriously and Coca-Cola UNITED has taken every step to ensure the identified products have been removed from the Florida Panhandle market."
