The 44-year-old carrier, who had 18 years of service with the USPS, was shot shortly before 6 p.m. CST, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service also confirmed that a letter carrier was killed, WITI-TV reported.

“That’s the most devastating part -- like, we all get up every day to go to work to provide for our families,” Jeff Brown, who lives in the neighborhood, told the television station. “Is it really that bad that we have to look over our shoulders to go provide for our families?”

Police have not announced any suspects or arrests, WISN-TV reported.

The circumstances surrounding the incident is unclear.

“The postal worker in this homicide was a public servant, which makes this crime even more disturbing,” Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s office said in a statement. “Criminals responsible for death and harm in our city must be held accountable. To accomplish that, anyone with information about this crime, or other serious crime in Milwaukee, should step forward.”

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is leading the investigation, CNN reported.

“The safety and security of postal employees is a top priority,” the agency said in a statement.
