Police told KABC that it’s unclear what prompted the shootout or whether the two men involved knew each other.
In a message to the community, Montebello Police Chief Paul Espinosa said, “We are indeed fortunate no one was injured in this shocking incident. Still, the suspects remain at large — which is why our detectives decided to release a security video hoping that our community’s tips may assist our investigation.”
“I could have been back here,” Javier Romero, a 7-Eleven cashier, told KABC. “It’s really a scary thing. You just hit the floor, pray that you don’t get hit.”
Romero was not working when the shooting happened, but saw police in the area, he told the station.
“I couldn’t come in because the cops were around everywhere, but from what I heard, there were two people having an argument and they started shooting at each other,” Romero told KABC.
