A truck driver had been sentenced to 110 years behind bars after a deadly crash in 2019, but more than one million people want his sentence reviewed and lessened.
Rogel Aguilera-Mederos was driving on Interstate 70 in Colorado when his truck crashed into multiple cars, The New York Times reported.
The accident happened on April 25, 2019, and left four people dead.
Aguilera-Mederos was convicted by a jury in October of 27 counts, including vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.
He was sentenced to 110 years in prison after the judge, A. Bruce Jones, said each count must be served consecutively instead of concurrently.
Aguilera-Mederos said the brakes on his truck malfunctioned. Calls from The New York Times to the company that he was working were not returned.
Prosecutors said Aguilera-Mederos was responsible because he didn’t steer the truck to a runaway truck ramp, the Times reported.
James Colgan, Aguilera-Mederos’ attorney, told KCNC he plans to appeal his client’s case on trial errors instead of the sentence.
The Denver Post has asked Colorado Gov. Jared Polis to commute Aguilera-Mederos’ sentence and to change the law.
A Change.org petition to have Polis either grant Aguilera-Mederos clemency or a commutation has gained 4.3 million signatures.
The governor said he will review any clemency application, but as of Friday had not received any, KCNC reported.
