Paul Pelosi’s alleged attacker facing additional charges in San Francisco

The San Francisco district attorney on Monday announced additional charges for the man who allegedly attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, on Friday in their house.
David Wayne DePape, 42, is facing additional local charges in San Francisco including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment and other charges, according to San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins in a news conference Monday. Jenkins said that DePape is facing 13 years to life in prison.
Jenkins said that DePape is expected to be arraigned Tuesday. According to CNN, Jenkins said her office will be working to detain DePape without bail.
Jenkins stated in the news conference that the attack appeared to be “politically motivated,” according to The Associated Press. Jenkins also said that Nancy Pelosi and her house were specifically targeted.
According to KRON, Jenkins in the news conference said that there was no security present at Pelosi’s house when the attacker broke in and attacked Paul Pelosi.

Nancy Pelosi on Monday evening released a statement on Paul Pelosi’s attack.
“Since the horrific attack on Paul early Friday, we have been deluged with thousands of messages conveying concern, prayers and warm wishes. We are most grateful. Thanks to the excellent trauma care medical team at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Paul is making steady progress on what will be a long recovery process. Our family thanks everyone for their kindness,” Nancy Pelosi said in a news release.
DePape is also facing federal charges, including assault on the immediate family member of a federal official and attempted kidnapping of a federal official. In an affidavit made public Monday, officials said DePape told Paul Pelosi that he was looking for Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and that he intended to wait until she returned to the house.
Paul Pelosi told investigators that he was asleep when DePape broke into the Pelosi family’s home on Friday and walked into his bedroom. He said he was able to go into the bathroom and call 911. He told officials that he had never seen DePape before.
Paul Pelosi made an excuse to use the bathroom where he was able to call 911, Jenkins said, according to KRON. Once the suspect learned that a call was made, he allegedly took Pelosi downstairs.
Officers arrived about two minutes later where they encountered Paul Pelosi and DePape struggling over a hammer. According to KRON, the officer’s witnessed DePape allegedly hit Paul Pelosi with the hammer.
According to Jenkins per KRON, the hammer that Paul Pelosi was hit with did belong to DePape. DePape also allegedly had an additional hammer, a roll of tape and zip ties on him.
The investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released, including an update on Paul Pelosi’s condition.
