PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon romance writer, Nancy Crampton Brophy, has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering her husband in 2018.
Crampton Brophy, 71, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years for the second-degree murder of her husband, Chef Daniel Brophy, 63, in 2018. He was shot twice — once in the back and then in the chest close up — at the Portland culinary school where he taught, according to CNN.
KGW said that Crampton Brophy, the self-published author of an online essay, “How to Murder Your Husband,” was found guilty on May 25 after a seven-week trial.
Prosecutors claimed that Crampton Brophy was set to gain her husband’s life insurance money following his death, according to KGW. Surveillance video outside of the institute also showed her gray minivan around the time he was murdered. Crampton Brophy claimed she had a “memory hole” and had a hard time piecing together what took place that day, according to KOIN.
Prosecutors argued that Crampton Brophy’s motive was Brophy’s significant life insurance policy as the couple was reportedly having financial issues, according to CNN. However, she testified at the trial that she was better off financially with him alive.
Prosecutors in court, according to CNN, said that Crampton Brophy followed her husband to work and shot him. Two gun casings were found at the scene and they said she bought a “ghost gun” kit that investigators located at a storage facility. CNN said she told the jury that she bought the gun for research for a new book she was working on.
KGW said a restitution is scheduled for August.
