Airline employee dies in crash on tarmac at Austin airport

AUSTIN, Texas — An employee at an airport in Austin, Texas, died Thursday, airport officials confirmed.

Officials at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport confirmed on Twitter that they were notified that the Austin-Travis County EMS was called to assist with an injured airline employee.

First responders were called to the airport around 2 p.m. Austin-Travis County EMS officials said, according to KXAN, for a person who was reported to have “traumatic injuries on the tarmac.”

Austin Police Department officials said officers were called out for a crash at the airport, according to KTBC, involving an airline employee who was driving a ground service vehicle that had reportedly hit a jet bridge. The vehicular homicide unit is investigating the death as an accident.

Police did not say what airline the employee worked for nor did they identify the man, the news outlet reported.

Airport officials said there were no significant impacts to the operations at the airport following the accident and staff is working with the airline and with Austin-Travis County EMS.

“Our thoughts are with this employee and all those impacted by today’s tragic event,” the airport said on Twitter.

The Austin American-Statesman reported that the person who died worked for American Airlines.

“We are devastated by the accident involving a team member at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time,” American Airlines said in a statement obtained by KXAN.
