NEW YORK — New York authorities, using license plate camera readers, seized 53 cars Friday in the latest crackdown on fake paper license plates.
The New York City Sheriff’s Office patrolled multiple neighborhoods from midnight to 8 a.m. to find the fraudulent tags, WABC reported.
Drivers use the fake plates to evade cameras used to detect speed, red-light running and tolls. Cars with fake tags are also used to commit other crimes including drive-by shootings, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Deputies also issued 50 tickets for parking and other traffic infractions, WPIX reported.
This year, deputies have seized 238 vehicles, written 200 tickets and charged 21 people with crimes related to counterfeit license plates, WABC reported.
