ATLANTA — One woman died and at least four others were injured when a gunman opened fire Wednesday afternoon in a lobby at a Northside Hospital facility in Atlanta’s Midtown, according to police and WSB-TV.
Authorities identified the suspected shooter as 24-year-old Deion Patterson. He was taken into custody on Wednesday evening.
Suspect booked on murder, aggravated assault charges
Update 10:39 p.m. EDT May 3: Deion Duwane Patterson was booked into the Fulton County Jail on Wednesday night, according to online booking record.
He has been charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault, online records show.
The victim who was killed has been identified as Amy St. Pierre, 39, WSB-TV reported.

Georgia Gov. Kemp ‘heartbroken’ after shooting
Update 9:29 p.m. EDT May 3: Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued a statement in the aftermath of Wednesday’s shooting in Atlanta, saying that he was “heartbroken.” The governor also praised the efforts of law enforcement officers.
“Thanks to their efforts, the shooter is now in custody and will face justice,” Kemp said. “Those heroes demonstrated yet again their professionalism, courage, and unwavering dedication to protecting their fellow Georgians.”

Deion Patterson taken into custody in Cobb County ‘without incident’
Update 9:06 p.m. EDT May 3: Cobb County Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer told reporters during a Wednesday evening news conference that technology played a huge role in finding the suspect, bringing the department “amazing tools” that helped officers sift through clues and eventually find Deion Patterson.
He added that Patterson, 24, was taken into custody without incident. According to CNN, Patterson was arrested at Waterford Place, a gated community located in Smyrna.
The joint news conference featured VanHoozer, officials from the Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.
Atlanta Deputy Chief Charles Hampton said that Patterson, accused in the shooting at the Northside Hospital medical building in the Midtown area of the city, stole a car that was left running at a Shell gasoline station. He then drove the vehicle into Cobb County, located north of Atlanta.
Dickens thanked the public during the news conference.
“I want to thank our citizens for remaining calm and staying in place,” Dickens said.
Police have not released the identities of the victims.

Suspect in custody, police say
Update 8:01 p.m. EDT May 3: Deion Patterson, the 24-year-old man suspected in a mass shooting that killed one person and injured four others at an Atlanta hospital, was taken into custody, authorities said.

Police search apartment rented by suspect’s brother
Update 6:52 p.m. EDT May 3: According to WSB-TV, a SWAT team with the Atlanta Police Department searched the apartment rented by the brother of accused shooter Deion Patterson.
Patterson was not at the residence, the television station reported.
A photograph posted by WSB identified a pickup allegedly driven by Patterson, 24. It was being towed from a location in Cobb County, according to the television station.

Grady Hospital’s medical officer gives update
Update 5:07 p.m. EDT May 3: Grady Hospital’s chief medical officer, Dr. Robert Jansen, told reporters that one patient was still in the operating room and one was in the interventional radiology department. The doctor said both patients were still in serious condition.
A third patient was stable in the trauma center, while a fourth “just got out” of the trauma center and was “doing well.”
Three of the four patients are still considered to be in critical condition, Jansen said.

Gunman served in Coast Guard
Update 4:29 p.m. EDT May 3: According to the Coast Guard, Deion Patterson, the suspected shooter in Wednesday’s shooting in Midtown Atlanta, served in that branch of the armed forces. He enlisted in 2018 and was discharged from active duty in January 2023.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the victims and their families,” Coast Guard officials said in a statement. “The Coast Guard Investigative Service is working closely with the Atlanta Police Department and local authorities in the investigation. Mr. Patterson entered the Coast Guard in July 2018 and last served as an Electrician’s Mate Second Class.”

Gunman believed to have carjacked vehicle after shooting
Update 3:55 p.m. EDT May 3: Police believe that the man who opened fire at a Northside Hospital facility in Midtown Atlanta on Wednesday stole a car to flee from the area.
Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the vehicle has since been recovered, though he declined to share details about where it was found.
“We believe he carjacked a vehicle a short distance away and was able to flee the scene as the law enforcement agencies were descending on this area,” he said.
Earlier, officials said a carjacking was reported shortly after the shooting less than a quarter-mile from the scene. Authorities urged people to contact police if they spot the suspected shooter, 24-year-old Deion Patterson. Officials said he was to be considered armed and dangerous.
Victims identified as women between 25 and 71 years old
Update 3:50 p.m. EDT May 3: Police Chief Darin Schierbaum identified the victims of Wednesday’s shooting as five women between the ages of 25 and 71.
Schierbaum said a 39-year-old woman was shot and killed on an upper level of the Northside Hospital building in Midtown Atlanta. Five other women, aged 71, 56, 39 and 25, were injured.
It was not immediately clear whether the women were targeted.
“We just don’t know,” Schierbaum said. “It is still too soon to know why these individuals were chosen.”
A gunman opened fire just before 12:10 p.m. in a waiting room at the Northside Hospital facility. Authorities have identified him as Deion Patterson, 24.
Authorities investigating carjacking reported after shooting
Update 3:25 p.m. EDT May 3: Police are investigating a carjacking reported a short distance from the scene of Wednesday’s shooting to determine whether it might be connected with the incident.
Authorities said a carjacking happened at 14th Street at Williams Street, less than a quarter-mile from the Northside Hospital facility where gunshots rang out Wednesday. It was reported shortly after the shooting, officials said.
Reports indicated the vehicle had since been recovered in Cobb County, though authorities said that was not the case later Wednesday.
“We are working to locate the carjacked vehicle and to determine whether it is connected to the shooting in any way,” officials said.

At least 3 in critical condition after shooting
Update 2:50 p.m. EDT May 3: Officials with Grady Hospital said that three of the four people injured Wednesday were in critical condition after being shot at a Northside Hospital facility.
Grady Hospital’s chief medical officer, Dr. Robert Jansen, told reporters that the fourth injured person was still in the emergency department on Wednesday afternoon.
“The others are upstairs being treated, two in the operating room and one in what’s called interventional radiology,” he said.
The victims were all adults and some had their families with them at Grady, Jansen said.
“No other injuries occurred, that we know of, and no one was taken to any other facility,” he said.
Hospital officials briefly stopped visitors from coming to the facility on Wednesday as authorities searched for the gunman who opened fire at the Northside Hospital building.
“We’re confident now that we can let visitors back in,” Jansen said. “We never locked the hospital down, we just wanted to stop visitors just in case something was going on.”
Police continue to search for the gunman.

Update 1:35 p.m. EDT May 3: Police confirmed that four people were shot on Wednesday afternoon. Three were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries while a fourth was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers are actively searching for the suspect and any other victims,” police said in a 1:30 p.m. update.
Earlier, police released photos of the person believed to have opened fire on Wednesday. Authorities urged people to call 911 if they knew the person’s whereabouts.
“The suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous and shot not be approached,” police said.
Original report: An ongoing shooting situation Wednesday at a hospital facility in Atlanta has left multiple people injured, according to WSB-TV.
In a series of social media posts, police said they were “investigating an active shooter in the area of 1110 W Peachtree St NW.”
“No suspect is in custody,” officials said in an update posted just after 12:40 p.m. “Anyone in the area is asked to secure their building and shelter in place. Anyone not in the area is asked to stay away.”
Police released photos of the suspected shooter, asking people to BOLO or “be on the lookout.”
The shooting was reported at a Northside Hospital facility, WSB reported. Dozens of heavily-armed officers were seen Wednesday at the scene.
Witnesses, including a WSB reporter, said they saw people being taken out of the building on stretchers and taken to waiting ambulances.
It was not immediately clear how many people were injured.
