Jacob Darnell Lewis, 25, of Madison, was arrested Friday and charged with felony fleeing, possession of a controlled substance and introducing contraband to a correctional facility, according to a news release from Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones.

The sheriff said Lewis was seen outside the Raymond Detention Center in a gray Dodge Challenger by a transportation deputy at around 8:30 p.m. CDT Thursday, WLBT-TV reported. The vehicle matched the description of one recently involved in a smuggling attempt at the jail, Jones said in the news release.

“The deputy approached the vehicle and observed the driver get out and throw items (packs) wrapped in different materials over the fence,” Jones said.

The packs held alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamine, formaldehyde, tobacco, knives, a saw, cellphones and chargers, cigars, pills and a semi-automatic rifle, according to WAPT-TV.

Lewis attempted to flee from the scene, but other deputies became involved and he was arrested after a short chase, the television station reported.

“The deputies responsible for responding to this incident and the keen observation of the transportation deputy should be commended for their swift actions and resilient response to apprehend this offender and deter these dangerous items from entering the facility,” Jones said in the news release.

Lewis was booked into the Raymond Detention Center at about 2:25 a.m. CDT Friday, according to online booking records.
