GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. — This isn’t your typical big fish.
Greenville County Parks, Recreation and Tourism in South Carolina recently made an unusual discovery at Oak Grove Lake – a massive, 9-pound goldfish.
According to WYFF-TV and the Greenville Journal, officials spotted the larger-than-life, non-native fish while performing tests on the lake.
“The work included electrofishing, a method of measuring the health of the fish population,” the department wrote in a social media post Monday. The practice stuns fish without hurting them, allowing specialists to examine the lake’s population, WYFF reported.
In the post, which included a photo of the 9-pounder, officials quipped, “Anyone missing their goldfish?”
The department also fielded several questions from curious commenters.
“How many years do you think this goldfish has been in the lake?” one follower wrote.
“We have no idea. He didn’t say!” officials joked in response.
When asked whether the fish was removed or returned to the lake, the department replied: “Currently unnamed goldfish is obviously very happy and healthy at Oak Grove Lake, so we just said hello and put him back.”
