Just in time for the holidays, the LEGO Group is releasing its most colossal model yet: a 9,090-piece replica of the RMS Titanic.
The Danish toymaker’s latest offering - sure to delight historians, nautical enthusiasts and disaster buffs alike - is a 1:200 scale model of the doomed ocean liner that includes a recreation of the ship’s bridge, promenade deck and swimming pool, Popular Mechanics reported.
Measuring 54 inches long, or just over 4.5 feet, the replica also features the luxury liner’s “intricate interiors,” including its grand staircase and boiler room, as well as exterior propellers that allow hobbyists to watch the piston engine turn, raise the anchor and adjust the tension between masts, the magazine reported.
When the real-life vessel embarked on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York on April 10, 1912, it was the largest passenger ship afloat. Two days later, however, the Titanic infamously struck an iceberg at around midnight, killing 1,517 of the 2,223 passengers and crew as it sank into icy waters in fewer than three hours, CNN reported.
“At the time of its launch the Titanic was the pinnacle of nautical engineering, the largest moving vehicle ever created. It has been an incredible journey to recreate this iconic vessel from LEGO bricks, using blueprints created over a century ago,” Mike Psiaki, design master at the LEGO Group, said in a statement released Thursday.
Although the LEGO Titanic set will not officially be available for purchase until Nov. 8, the company is accepting pre-orders beginning Nov. 1 for $629.99, CNN reported.
LEGO’s prior record for largest model set was held by its Colosseum replica, with only 54 fewer pieces than the Titanic, according to Popular Mechanics.
