LEXINGTON, Ky. — Triple Crown winner Justify’s first foal was born Friday in Kentucky, the horse’s owners said.
Justify, who won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in 2018, was retired to stud, WKYT reported. The filly was born out of the mare Foreign Affair at Amaroo Farm in Lexington, owners Audley Farm of Berryville, Virginia, announced Saturday.
According to BloodHorse, Justify’s advertised stud fee is $150,000.
“The mare was due to foal on the 10th, so it’s just a few days early, but that’s OK,” Audley Farm’s Jamie McDiarmid told WLEX. “The main thing is that the foal is happy and healthy. So far, everything has gone really well. She’ll come back to be Virginia-registered, and the mare will stay here and foal out a Virginia-bred next year. That’s the plan.”
Justify was the first horse since 1882 to win the Kentucky Derby without starting as a 2-year-old, according to WLEX. He was also the first unbeaten Triple Crown winner since Seattle Slew in 1977.
