FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Firefighters did more than put out flames when they responded to a car fire in Tennessee Monday: they also saved an engagement ring inside.

Brooklynn Stevens and Myers Hart were driving a rental car when they heard a pop, pulled over, and then realized the car was on fire, WSMV reported.

“There was a loud bang. I think the coolant reservoir blew, and it shot the hood up and spewed fluid everywhere, and then it went up in flames,” Hart told WSMV.

In a Facebook post, Williamson Fire-Rescue shared photos showing the burned car, which was destroyed by the fire.

Stevens, Hart and Stevens’ friend, who was also in the car, were able to make it out safely, WSMV reported. But when the three made it out, Hart realized that the engagement ring he had bought to give to Stevens was still inside.

“Her friend knew about it, and we looked at each other and said, ‘The ring is in there and we couldn’t get it out,’” Hart told WSMV.

Once the flames were out, Hart told the firefighters about the ring.

“And we started sifting through all the ashes and everything, and it was melted against the seat, and actually it was perfectly encased in the ring box. I opened it up and it looked brand-new so it was really a miracle,” fire engineer Steve Hopkins told WSMV.

Firefighters said that once Hart had the ring, he immediately dropped to one knee to ask for his girlfriend’s hand in marriage.

“And he gets on one knee and I’m like, ‘Here?,’ and I started crying. I said, ‘Here? Right now? Like the car just caught on fire, are you serious? I mean yes!,’” Stevens told WSMV.

In their post, firefighters wished many future years of happiness to the future bride and groom.
