The 74-year-old homeowner, identified by WEWS as James Lowgher, said he had fallen asleep watching television and was waked when he heard someone break in through the home’s front door.

“He didn’t belong here and I knew damn well after he came through the door like that, I can shoot him,” Lowgher told WEWS. “He headed to the basement and I pumped two into him there. He went down the steps that way and I got him a third time, I hope.”

Lowgher has not been charged. “Most would agree that within reason, someone has a right to defend themselves, so in that someone broke into his house, in that he’s confronted with an unknown person with an unknown motive, all those things will be taken into consideration,” Lt. Michael Miller, spokesperson for the Akron Police, told WKYC.

The teenager was treated on the scene and then taken to Akron Children’s Hospital, where WEWS reported he remains in stable condition.

Lowgher told WJW that he didn’t recognize the suspect.
