JENSEN BEACH, Fla. — Workers in Florida removing an old utility pole came across unexpected occupants last week.
Pike Electric workers found a nest containing screech owl eggs, WPEC reported.
The screech owl is Florida’s smallest owl, according to the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
Utility worker Josh Hamel called animal services after making the discovery, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. An animal control officer arrived at the scene and a plan was devised to safely relocate the active nest to the new pole. A donated birdhouse was installed on the new pole, pointing in the same direction as the nest’s previous location. The eggs were then carefully transferred to the birdhouse.
