HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida man is accused of throwing golf clubs onto an interstate highway and then striking a state trooper who pulled him over, authorities said.
Jonathan Edward Day, 41, of North Port, was arrested Wednesday on felony charges of battery on an officer, resisting an officer with violence and depriving an officer of means of protection or communication, and a misdemeanor charge of resisting an officer without violence, according to Hillsborough County online booking records.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol news release, Day also faces charges of throwing a deadly missile from a vehicle, possession of marijuana, controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Day was being held at the Hillsborough County Jail, with bail set at $6,500.
According to the FHP, a trooper received a complaint at about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday of a motorist throwing golf clubs out of his window while driving north on Interstate 75 in southern Hillsborough County.
The driver, later identified as Day, was stopped 25 miles north and then confronted the trooper with a golf club, WFTS reported. At first, Day complied with an order to put the club down, but he began to resist when the trooper attempted to take him into custody, the television station reported.
Day then allegedly struck the trooper with his fist and pulled at his uniform and radio, the Times reported. The trooper then used a stun gun to subdue Day, the newspaper reported.
