Florida man accused of crashing Tesla into home while fleeing police

BELLEAIR SHORE, Fla. — A Florida man suspected of driving while intoxicated is accused of crashing a Tesla into a home while fleeing a traffic stop on Thursday, authorities said.

Aaron Nicholas Meyer, 26, of Riverview, faces a charge of fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers, and of being a fugitive from Kentucky on a violation of parole charge, according to Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

Meyer suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, sheriff’s office spokesperson Sgt. Jessica Mackesy told the Tampa Bay Times. No one else was injured, and no one was in the home at the time of the crash, Mackesy said.

According to an arrest report, a deputy observed Meyer asleep in a 2021 blue Tesla at about 3:39 a.m. EST, the newspaper reported.

Deputies were speaking with Meyer and suspected he was intoxicated when he drove away, according to the Times. Moments later, Meyer crashed into a home in Belleair Shore. The car crashed through the property’s barrier wall and hit the residence, WTVT-TV reported.

Meyer was arrested and taken to an area hospital, the television station reported. After he was released, he was booked into the Pinellas County Jail at 11:26 a.m. EST, online booking records show. Bail was set at $10,000.
