LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida sheriff’s K-9 found a missing 12-year-old girl Tuesday night after she went missing as Tropical Storm Elsa hit the state.
Lee County Sheriff’s Office said K-9 Mercy responded as part of the ReUnite Program, a search and rescue operation for those at-risk, People reported.
“Despite severe weather from Tropical Storm Elsa, Mercy tracked the little girl for more than half a mile through thick woods,” the agency said on social media.
The girl was safely reunited with her family.
Mercy was given a badge in 2020 after graduating from a six-month training program, the News-Press reported.
The sheriff’s ReUnite Program is a partnership with the United Way and uses drones, bloodhounds and other technology to track and find missing and endangered people.
