On Tuesday, every seat in the U.S. House of Representatives is up for election.
Currently, Democrats have the majority in the House with 220 seats to 212 Republican seats. However, after Tuesday’s election, that landscape will change.
Republicans are favored by some pundits to win a majority in the House, but the current Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-California, says she believes Democrats will hold the chamber.
Here are a few House races to watch on Election Day:
Texas 34: Mayra Flores (R) vs. Vicente Gonzalez (D)
Mayra Flores won a special election in June to fill this seat. The district has been redrawn, and she will be facing Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, who represents Texas’ 15th district.
Gonzalez announced last year that he would run for reelection from the 34th Congressional District because the 15th district was redrawn during redistricting.
California 22: Rudy Salas (D) vs. David Valadao (R)
The election in California’s 22nd district could be a test of former President Donald Trump’s reach.
Republican incumbent Rep. David Valadao voted to impeach Trump for the Jan. 6, 2011, Capitol riot. Unlike some other races, Trump did not endorse anyone against Valadao.
Will Republican voters look past Valadao’s vote and support him? His Democratic challenger Rudy Salas hopes they won’t.
Maine 2: Jared Golden (D) vs. Bruce Poliquin (R)
Democratic Rep. Jared Golden takes on Republican Bruce Poliquin in a rematch of the 2018 midterm election for this seat.
Golden is a moderate who was the only Democrat to vote against President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan. Poliquin says he wants to bring “Maine common sense” back to Congress.
Trump had a 7-percentage point margin of victory in the district in 2020, but the district has been redrawn.
Michigan 7: Tom Barrett (R) vs. Elissa Slotkin (D)
The 7th Congressional District in Michigan has been reconfigured due to redistricting. U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin is seeking her third term to represent the district.
Challenging Slotkin is Tom Barrett, a state senator who represents a good part of the newly drawn district in the state Legislature.
In 2018, Slotkin was one of 31 Democrats to flip Republican seats in congressional districts that Trump had won in the 2016 election.
New Hampshire 1: Karoline Leavitt (R) vs. Chris Pappas
Karoline Leavitt, who is a former Trump White House assistant press secretary, is taking on Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas. Leavitt is 25 and would be the youngest woman to be elected to the U.S. House if she wins.
The seat has flipped five times in seven elections.
New Jersey 7: Tom Kean Jr (D) vs. Tom Malinowski (R)
Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski is running for reelection in the 7th District against Republican state Sen. Tom Kean Jr. It is a rematch for the two.
The race is being seen as a bellwether of a potential Republican sweep of House seats. Malinowski has pointed to Kean’s stance on abortion — Kean says he believes in a woman’s right to choose but opposes abortion after 20 weeks unless there are extenuating circumstances.
The district went for Biden by less than 4 percentage points in 2020. And, according to the New York Times, Malinowski remains under investigation by the House Ethics Committee over allegations he failed to properly disclose hundreds of thousands of dollars in stock trades. Malinowski has said that it was an error — a result of his carelessness.
Nevada 1: Dina Titus (D) vs. Mark Robertson (R)
Nevada’s 1st Congressional District is another district where redrawn district lines could play a significant role in the election’s outcome.
Six-term Democratic Rep. Dina Titus is running against Republican Mark Robertson in the district that was once deeply Democratic.
Biden had a 25-percentage point margin of victory in the district in 2020 before it was redrawn.
North Carolina 13: Bo Hines (R) vs. Wiley Nickel (D)
A former college football player, Bo Hines, 27, is running against state Sen. Wiley Nickel, who worked for former Vice President Al Gore and former President Barack Obama.
Hines has been endorsed by Trump and defeated seven Republican opponents to get the nomination for the seat.
President Joe Biden had a 5-percentage point margin of victory over Trump in 2020, but the district has been redrawn to move it east and make it slightly more Republican.
Virginia 7: Abigail Spanberger (D) vs. Yesli Vega (R)
Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who is seeking a third term in the House, will face off with Yesli Vega, a sheriff’s deputy and district supervisor in Prince William County.
The district, which Biden won by 6 points in 2020, was flipped by Glenn Youngkin when he became Virginia’s governor following last year’s election.
It was redrawn after the 2020 Census, making it slightly more Democratic. The race is currently leaning slightly toward Spanberger, who formerly worked for the CIA.
