Dog adopted after spending 729 days at Colorado animal shelter

MONTE VISTA, Colo. — Drools, a 4-year-old pit bull-boxer mix who spent nearly two years in a Colorado animal shelter, was adopted this week.

About two weeks ago, Kacey Widetich moved into the Conour Animal Shelter to bring attention to Drools and other rescue dogs that need adoption.

“These remote shelters are so understaffed and just don’t have the capacity to adequately market all these sweet pups,” Widetich, the founder of Relay for Rescue, an animal welfare nonprofit, told KCNC. “If my spending the night in the shelter for a few nights helps even one dog get adopted, I will have done my job. But I’m not stopping at just one — they all deserve a second chance at happily ever after.”

Wednesday was the 12th day of Widetich’s stay. It was also Drools' 729th, and his last, he was adopted that day. A man drove in from Boulder to take Drools home. Drools left with a new bed, toys and treats.

“I feel like I won the lottery,” Drools new owner told KRDO.

In addition to Drools, Widetich was able to get three other dogs adopted.

“All of these dogs deserve a second chance at happily ever after just like Drools and I look forward to working with the shelter to ensure this continues to happen moving forward,” Widetich told KRDO.
