Earlier Friday, his family said he was in organ failure, but had still been on life support with doctors not able to do much, TMZ reported.
He died surrounded by family, according to his representatives.
Known for producing songs like “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” and “Party Up (Up in Here)” had what was characterized as “catastrophic cardiac arrest” on April 2, The Associated Press reported.
He had struggled with drug addiction since he was a teen, but his lawyer would not confirm reports that he had overdosed, causing the cardiac arrest, the AP reported.
A statement by his representatives released over the weekend said “He is in a coma and on a ventilator at this time. The family appreciates all of the love and prayers from everyone around the world. The family will update everyone as we are updated. Otherwise please respect the privacy of the family,” CNN reported.
About 500 fans had gathered outside the White Plains, New York, hospital where DMX had been on life support to hold a prayer vigil Tuesday, News12 West Chester reported.
DMX was born Earl Simmons and grew up in Yonkers. He still had a connection to his original neighborhood, giving back to the community that raised him by feeding the neighbors on Thanksgiving and donating to the same community center he grew up in, CNN reported.
