What exactly did pilots flying from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Phoenix, Arizona, see during their trip Sunday afternoon?
The flight crew noticed something that they said was quick moving and unusual flying above American Airlines flight 2292.
The pilot can be heard on radio recordings ask the tower, “Do you have any targets up here? We just had something go right over the top of us,” Fox News reported.
He added, “I hate to say this but it looked like a long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile-type thing moving really fast. It went right over the top of us.”
The recording was made by Steve Douglass, who calls himself a “stealth chaser” living in Amarillo, Texas, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
Douglass, who is a news photographer for KVII, was listening live when the radio transmission happened.
American Airlines officials confirmed that the audio was recorded on flight 2292 on Feb. 21. But instead of any explanation of what was seen, the company directed media outlets to contact the FBI, Fox News reported.
The FBI told the Journal that it is aware of the report, but did not release any other information concerning the incident.
New Mexico is the site of White Sands Missile Range, which was about 400 miles from the encounter. Officials there said no tests were being conducted at the range Sunday, Fox News reported.
