DALLAS — The Dallas Zoo added a new zebra to its population.
Wanda, a Hartmann’s mountain zebra, gave birth to a male on March 11, zoo officials said in a Facebook post on Monday.
The foal, which has not been named, weighs 60 pounds, The Dallas Morning News reported. He is the third Hartmann’s mountain zebra to be born at the zoo under the species survival plan created through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the newspaper reported.
“This stripy baby is doing well and nursing frequently,” zoo officials wrote on Facebook. ”He’s spending time bonding with his mom behind the scenes for now, but we’ll let you know when you can come see him in person.”
Hartmann’s mountain zebras are found in plateaus in southern Africa’s mountainous areas, according to Kruger National Park in South Africa. They live up to 25 years and spend most of their days grazing.
Hartmann’s mountain zebras grow to about 5 feet in height and weigh between 600 and 650 pounds, the Morning News reported.
