The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said its officers were called after a 25-year-old employee of a KFC was taken to a hospital for a gunshot wound to his abdomen, KSDK reported.

Investigators said the gunman was in the restaurant’s drive-thru and tried to place an order but was informed that the restaurant was out of corn, KTVI reported. The suspect allegedly responded by threatening the employee through the speaker.

The suspect, described as a man in his 40s or 50s, then drove up to the drive-thru window with a gun, police told KSDK.

The victim went outside to talk to the driver, and returned with a gunshot wound, KTVI reported. Police said the victim was driven to the hospital privately.

Police told KSDK that the victim was in critical condition with stable vitals on Tuesday morning.
