GROVETOWN, Ga. — Detectives in Georgia said they have identified a couple who stole more than $10,000 worth of merchandise and gift cards from Walmart.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said a man and woman grabbed expensive items at the Grovetown Walmart on Nov. 30 and took them to the checkout, WRDW reported.
Deputies shared photos of the individuals taken from surveillance video on the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. Though deputies said the suspects had been identified, their names were not publicly released.
Deputies told WRDW that the pair was able to get the cash and items by tricking the cashier, purchasing the items over several transactions using multiple gift cards and a credit card. During the transactions, the suspects allegedly asked the cashier to use the “cash” button on the register to make their cards work, but doing so caused the register to ring up the sale as if cash was paid, and did not charge the cards.
Deputies did not offer a specific amount stolen but said on Facebook it was in excess of $10,000. Investigators told WRDW the couple stole approximately $3,400 in merchandise and $3,000 in gift cards.
