FERGUSON, Mo. — A Missouri woman who was infected with the coronavirus and gave birth while intubated, welcomed her daughter home this week in time for the holidays.
Monique Jones was 26 weeks pregnant with her second child in September when she tested positive for the coronavirus and was hospitalized, KMOV reported.
Her condition got worse and doctors decided to intubate her. After three weeks, as her blood pressure increased and her life was in danger, doctors decided to deliver her baby at 29 weeks.
“Basically my daughter saved my life,” Jones said. “They had to take her out to help my condition.”
Jones awoke days later to learn she had delivered her baby. After five weeks, as Jones’ condition improved she was moved from the hospital to an inpatient rehabilitation clinic. She had to relearn how to walk after being medically paralyzed because of the combination of treatments while in the hospital.
Baby Zamyrah spent months in the intensive care unit gaining weight and growing before she was sent home, just before Christmas, KMOV reported.
“I feel like I’m complete and I feel like I was fighting not for me but for them,” she said. “Family always meant a lot and for me to have one of my own, it feels good, to have the support.”
