Coronavirus: Total US COVID-19 cases top 46 million as death toll surpasses 746,000

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 46 million on Monday, with nearly 2.3 million new coronavirus infections reported during the past 28 days.

By Monday afternoon, U.S. COVID-19 cases totaled 46,006,251, and the nationwide death toll reached 746,289, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

Meanwhile, global cases neared 247 million, resulting in more than 5 million virus-related fatalities. India has recorded the second-highest cumulative nationwide cases with more than 34 million, but the United Kingdom’s nearly 1.2 million new cases within the past 28 days trail only the United States. By contrast, Brazil has confirmed only 21.8 million cumulative cases, but its 607,824 virus-related deaths trail only the United States.

The latest figures mean that the most recent 1 million U.S. cases were reported within the past 14 days. During the nation’s winter peak, the U.S. averaged 1 million new cases every four days, according to Johns Hopkins data.

New York, Florida, Texas and California remain the hardest-hit U.S. states with cumulative infections ranging from nearly 2.6 million to more than 4.9 million. The following 10 other states have confirmed at least 1 million cases:

  • Illinois: Nearly 1.7 million cases, resulting in more than 28,000 deaths.
  • Georgia: More than 1.6 million cases, resulting in more than 29,000 deaths.
  • Pennsylvania: Nearly 1.6 million cases, resulting in more than 31,000 deaths.
  • Ohio: More than 1.5 million cases, resulting in nearly 25,000 deaths.
  • North Carolina: Nearly 1.5 million cases, resulting in more than 18,000 deaths.
  • Tennessee: Nearly 1.3 million cases, resulting in more than 16,000 deaths.
  • Michigan: Nearly 1.3 million cases, resulting in nearly 24,000 deaths.
  • New Jersey: Nearly 1.2 million cases, resulting in nearly 28,000 deaths.
  • Arizona: Nearly 1.2 million cases, resulting in more than 21,000 deaths.
  • Indiana: More than 1 million cases, resulting in nearly 17,000 deaths.

Sixteen other states have reported at least half a million cases, including Virginia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Missouri, Massachusetts, Alabama, Minnesota, Louisiana, Kentucky, Colorado, Washington, Oklahoma, Maryland, Utah, Arkansas and Mississippi. Meanwhile, another nine states have reported fewer than half a million cases but more than 200,000 cases, including Iowa, Nevada, Kansas, Connecticut, Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska, New Mexico and West Virginia.
