Coronavirus: Minnesota boy, 5, raises funds to feed 225 health care workers

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — The card said it all.

“thank you for risking your lives to save ours”

The simple note accompanied a special delivery Wednesday of enough meals to feed 225 frontline health care workers at Maple Grove Hospital in Minnesota, courtesy of a 5-year-old boy who wanted to lend a hand in the fight against COVID-19.

“It’s been a longer haul than any of us anticipated that it was going to be,” Wendy Ulferts, the hospital’s chief nursing officer told WCCO.

“We’re just trying to find the little silver linings, and this is one of them,” she added.

James Svensk told the TV station that the outreach project was his son Eli’s idea.

“Every night we’ve been praying about the virus and praying for the doctors and nurses,” James Svensk said, recounting the night Eli told him he wanted to help, and he specifically wanted to help health care workers.

In turn, the pair created a fundraising page to buy meals from an area restaurant as a thank-you to the employees at Maple Grove Hospital.

In only a few weeks, the fundraiser garnered nearly $3,000, and the proceeds filled 225 bellies not just with the offering but with the love and support of the child behind them, WCCO reported.

“We’re pretty sure they were smiling. We couldn’t see the smiles because of the masks, but we’re pretty sure they were smiling,” Eli Svensk told the TV station.
