Coronavirus: AMC reverses decision, will now require moviegoers to wear masks when theaters reopen

The world’s largest movie theater chain has reversed its decision to not require masks when the chain reopens.

The New York Times reported that the theater chain will now require guests to wear masks when the theaters reopen on July 15.

In a report published Thursday in Variety, AMC Entertainment Holdings CEO Adam Aron originally said his company, which operates more than 600 theaters in the United States, “did not want to be drawn into a political controversy” when its venues begin to reopen in mid-July.

“We thought it might be counterproductive if we forced mask wearing on those people who believe strongly that it is not necessary,” Aron initially told Variety, adding that its venues will sell masks to moviegoers who want one. “We think that the vast majority of AMC guests will be wearing masks. When I go to an AMC feature, I will certainly be wearing a mask and leading by example.”

Aron told the outlet that AMC will require its employees to wear masks and undergo temperature checks. The chain will not check customers' temperatures, he said.

According to the New York Times, 450 AMC Theatres in the U.S. will reopen July 15, with 150 more resuming operations by July 24.
