PLAINVILLE, N.Y. — It’s not a good idea to chase geese during icy weather.
A small Shih Tzu found itself trapped on the frozen Seneca River in New York on Thursday morning, the Syracuse Post-Standard reported.
The dog was chasing the birds near the river when he ran out onto the ice at about 9:12 a.m. EST and was suddenly stranded about 30 yards from shore, according to a news release from the Plainview Fire Department.
The dog became trapped when his leash became embedded into the ice, fire officials said.
Photos from the fire department showed fire officials rescuing the dog by crawling on the ice, WSTM-TV reported.
Three different crews from Onondaga County worked to rescue the dog, the television station reported.
The Jordan Fire Department provided the specialized equipment used to navigate the ice, the Post-Standard reported.
