Businessman plants banana tree in problem pothole

FORT MEYERS, Fla. — When a Florida businessman had enough of a deep pothole near his fitness company, he took matters into his own hands and filled the pothole.

First Bryan Raymond used traditional means like concrete to fill the void. But when the concrete wouldn’t stay put, he took his mission to the next level and planted a banana tree in the deep hole.

Raymond’s handiwork has gotten notice from other businesses on Honda Drive in Fort Meyers.

“I love it. I think it’s hilarious. We should have more of these,” Scott Shein, of SWFL RV Sales and Rentals, told WBBH.

The Honda Drive, according to Lee County officials, is the responsibility of the business owners since it is a private road, WINK reported.

Raymond said the potholes on Honda Drive have become an issue after he captured video of cars being swallowed up by the holes. The road, Raymond said, also floods enough to make his Dumpster float away

“If we have to maintain it and make sure nobody gets hurt, we are going to put something obvious there to make sure nobody gets in the hole,” Raymond told WBBH.

But not everyone is happy that a tree now grows in the Fort Meyers pothole.

“The tree makes it harder to get around the next pothole that’s right next to it. Because normally I just drive over the pothole but because there’s a big tree you can’t drive through a tree,” Nicholas Angus told WINK.
